Last week, thousands of residents in South Carolina were stranded in the dark and cold as the second winter storm (Winter Storm 2014)  in two weeks pummeled the state with snow, sleet and freezing rain that closed schools, local businesses and shutdown all the bridges in the area.  According to the Highway Patrol, many reports of accidents statewide as snow and ice-slicked highways knocked down trees and power lines and made driving hazardous and caused millions of dollars worth of damage to homes in the area. Power companies reported that at least 7,500 customers were without power, most of them in the Midlands — especially areas near Aiken, SC

Winter storms are always unpredictable but it’s hard to tell just how much damage they’re going to cause. A combination of ice, sleet and high winds like we saw last week can wreak havoc. Statewide reports say, it was the worst storm to hit South Carolina in the past decade. The federal government agreed with Haley’s request to declare the state a disaster area, making it eligible for federal aid. It was the first time South Carolina had a declared disaster since 2006. The National Weather Service that there was over an inch of ice which covered trees, roofs, and power lines. An inch-wide band of ice extended east through Bamberg and Orangeburg counties and into Colleton, Dorchester and Berkeley counties.

Due to all the power outages throughout Aiken County South Carolina, Aiken Electric Cooperative made the executive decision to bring in out-of-state contractors to assist in power restoration efforts, said CEO Gary Stooksbury. Now that power is being restored, Aiken community residents can begin to see about having their homes repaired from all the downed debris. Many roofs have been destroyed in the area as well as siding, gutters and windows. In reviewing comprehensive storm damage photos it is evident that Aiken SC had a heavy hit. Residents are encouraged to secure where possible, a Winter Storm Tracker app or home system to advise you and allow you to take shelter.
At Reeves Construction — Roofing – Siding – Gutters – Windows — it is our hope that we can help service the community to help restore and repair the damages from these recent winter storms.
