Questions To Ask A Roofer Before Hiring: Part 2

Greenville Spartanburg and Upstate Area Roofing – YES, Reeves!

Need a new roof? Looking at hiring a roofing contractor in Greenville or Spartanburg? If you answered yes to either, you should check out this series of questions to ask before you do hire a roofer. In case you missed Part 1 to this blog series called, “Questions To Ask A Roofer Before Hiring” click here to the first five questions.
Roofing question #1 Do you remove all existing roofing shingles before installing the my new roof?

If you have owned a home for some time or have ever dealt with a removal and replacement of roofing shingles before, then maybe the idea of a “layover” is familiar to you. A layover is when roofer do not removes the old shingles and instead install the new roof right on top of the old one. This used to be fairly common practice before my code upgrades in cities like Greenville and Spartanburg prevent you from doing layover. This is a good thing as it’s never a good idea to overlay brand new roof shingles over old shingles which carries moisture and mildew and can create problems for you new roof. In short, always insist that your old shingles are removed before hiring a roofer to do your job.

Roofing question #2. Do you install drip edge as a part of my roofing contract?

Why is drip edge an important question you ask? Drip edge is a very important small piece of aluminum trim which is installed under the shingle where the eaves are extended. This small piece of trim metal ensures that water flowing off your roof will properly flow into the gutters, rather than behind it, thus protecting your fascia boards. Without proper drip edge installation, it’s common to see issues like rotten fascia or soffit and sometime even leaks in your home. It’s very important to ask your roofer is they install drip edge or at the very least, pay for the added service as way to protect your home.

Roofing question #3. What kind of container to you drop for the debris removal process?

Some roofer drop roll-off dumpsters. Others drop dump trailers. And others have their own gooseneck dump trailers. Let’s face it. About a third of the exterior of your home will be ripped off and all the material needs to go somewhere. Make sure your  company agrees to bring a dump container and establish a proper location where the dumpster or trailer should be dropped.
Roofing questions #4. Do you take precautions if the weather turns for the worse?
Listen, your weather man isn’t always right. And the weather forecast doesn’t always turn out like it’s supposed. This isn’t too bad when you’re it work all day. But then when you’re having roofers tear off your roof, probably not so good. So we recommend asking your roofer what precautions the crew will take should a lovely day turn into a monsoon. Tarps and other heavy plastics which can be attached from the peak of the roof and lay down towards the eaves so the water sheds, is a good idea.
