An incredibly severe storm ripped through the Southeast yesterday, March 18th, knocking down trees, power lines and producing high winds and hail the size of Bubba’s golf balls. These storms wreaked havoc in Macon, Georgia and then produced similar weather all the way through Atlanta, Georgia and the surrounding areas. Currently (at this writing), there are over 40,000 people without power still today in Georgia due to these hail and wind storms. There was reportedly one person killed in the storms and 10 seriously injured.

The National Weather Service reported that there were wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour that could be blamed for all the trees down. The size of hail recorded ranged from pea-size on the east side of Atlanta to hail the size of an Atlanta Braves baseball. Mostly, the hail reported was quarter to golf ball sized.

This widespread damage caused significant damage to vehicles, buildings and residential homes and other properties. The economic loss due to the storm has not yet been calculated. In addition to the amount of vehicles damaged which were sitting outside, driving down the road or just in homeowners’ driveway, many cars lots and dealerships also reported major damages to their vehicle inventory.

Homeowners in Macon and other populated areas throughout Georgia are also concerned about the integrity of their roofs. This is because larger hail can significantly reduce the the life-span of the roof shingles.

Typically, after major hail storms, homeowners will contact a roofing company to give them a free inspection report which will provide the homeowner with more information in regards to the damage done to their home.

When we inspect homes after storms, we check the gutters and downspouts, siding, A/C units, and we check the entire roof and all vents for damage caused by hail.
