3 Questions To Ask A Roofer Before Hiring. Part 3

Greenville SC Roofing — Roofing, Siding, Gutters, Windows, and More!
Need a new roof? Looking at hiring a roofing contractor in Greenville or Spartanburg? If you answered yes to either, you should check out this series of questions to ask before you do hire a roofer. In case you missed Part 1 to this blog series called, “Questions To Ask A Roofer Before Hiring” click here to the first five questions.
Below are the remaining questions in this blog post series that we recommend you should ask before hiring a roofer for your next project:
Roofing question #1: How long is the manufactures warranty good for on my roof?

You want to hear a minimum of 25 year warranty from the roofing manufacturer. Although, we recommend a lifetime architectural shingle that will hold up much longer against elements like high winds, small hail and other impacts to your roof. And these roofs only cost about 15% more than a builders grade 25 year shingle.

Roofing question #2: Should I need plywood or other wood repaired or replaced, how much will that cost me?

If you have an older roof, it’s possible — even probable — that you will need to have some wood replaced while the roof is being replaced. This could be the plywood or other decking under the roof or it could be fascia or soffit boards that may need replaced. Either way, as a homeowner, you want to make sure that you and your roofer have agreed to a certain “price per sheet” when referring to decking or a “price per foot” when referring to trim boards or other linear wood replacement. There are many roof types and each has special ways of being repaired or replaced.

Hate to say it, but roofers have been known to overcharge for these services once the roof has bee installed . And once the roof is up, it’s tough for you to dispute an overinflated cost for wood replacement. You don’t want any unforeseen surprises during or after your roofing process. Also, by having an estimated cost of wood replacement, you can see how others roofers’ quotes compare.
Roofing question #3: How will you protect my landscaping during the roofing process?
Its your home. Its probably your single largest investment too. You don’t want it torn up if it can be prevented. This is why we believe it’s important to protect your home as much as possible during the roofing process. As a homeowner, ask your roofer how they intent to protect your landscaping such as bushes, schrubs, flowers, etc.
Just because it’s a roof and it’s high doesn’t mean the ground around the home will not be affected. If you spend time and money planting trees, shrubs and flowers, or tending to your garden, the last thing you want is to come home to a disaster after having a new roof installed. Before you hire a roofing company, ask specifically what they will do to protect your landscaping. Where will the ladders be set up? Where will the old shingles and wood be dropped or tossed so that it doesn’t affect the bushes and flowers that surround your house? Will they set put tarps over the shrubbery? If an accident does occur and an employee from the company tromps through your garden, what will the roofer do to fix the damage?
